It is most likely squirrels. Squirrels are part of the rodentia family that use old bones in the forest to cut their teeth. If they don’t, their teeth will grow out of their skull and kill them. Since our urban forest contains more squirrels than carcasses these days, we see a lot of damage to their second favorite medium, the hardwood of maple trees. Maples are also a little sweet treat for them (think maple syrup). Our native Bigleaf and Vine maples, along with Japanese and Norway maples, are all dental delicacies for the squirrel. As tree climbers ourselves, the squirrel is easy to appreciate, and is a welcome companion in the canopy. Active nests are often encountered and navigated around. Some jobs are postponed until after the young are mature enough to leave the nest, which can be up to 4 months after birth. Moms can have 2 gestation periods, producing litters in the early spring and fall. We install deer antlers to distract them from chewing as an alternative to other management strategies.

Specimen trees in the right locations can add massive dollar amounts to property values. Large fines are levied against those that unlawfully remove trees. We are not lawyers, so seek legal council first and foremost. Again, please consult with your attorney for the latter!
It’s already here. Currently, the outbreak has not traveled south of Forest Grove that we know of. Colleagues up there have stated that they’ve pulled 15 adult EAB from their truck after leaving a jobsite, and residents of the community, out of necessity, going about their daily lives to travel to work, etc, unknowingly transporting these buggers. Quarantine efforts in most of the country have proven difficult. EAB has been said to be the most destructive pest that North America has ever seen by many government agencies. Locally, the worst impacts will be seen out in the wetlands. It is mostly comprised of our native Oregon ash, Fraxinus latifolia, which will decompose into calcium, where primarily noxious weeds will grow. For more doom and gloom reading, see the State of Oregon Emergency Preparedness Plan for EAB

If you live in the Willamette Valley and have a birch tree, it is likely exposed to the bronze birch bore infestation. The systematic insecticide Imidacloprid can temporarily relieve your tree of the pests, but it is also lethal to honey bees and other pollinators. A healthy tree is the best defense, so have our ISA certified arborists come out for a free estimate.
